Murrieta Kids Learn About Recycling--at the Dump

Children from the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest County Murrieta Clubhouse participate in summer learning about garbage and recycling.

Thereโ€™s nothing like going to the dump to realize how much waste we create.

Children from the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest County Murrieta Clubhouse took a large step towards greater environmental sustainability after a visit to the Waste Management El Sobrante Landfill earlier this month.

The group toured the facility and learned about the disposal process for the City of Murrietaโ€™s garbage as part of the Clubโ€™s Voyage of Discovery Summer Break Camp.

During the two-hour learning event, Waste Management staff gave the children a behind-the-scenes look at the El Sobrante Landfillโ€™s daily operations and environmental systems that protect air and water. The kids also viewed the facilityโ€™s newest disposal area, which is designed to hold 7.6 million pounds of the communityโ€™s refuse.

In addition to touring the facility, the children engaged in learning activities that encouraged them to save more raw materials, energy and landfill space by recycling often and recycling right.

The young enthusiasts also got creative with putting items to reuse and made bird feeders out of 2-liter soda bottles.

Since 2000, the Waste Management El Sobrante Landfill has been providing outdoor education programs that give students, scouts and the community at large hands-on experiences with waste, recycling and environmental stewardship.

Waste Management has been the waste and recycling service provider for the City of Murrieta since 1994.
