'A Wonderful Educator,' MVUSD Board Trustee Barbara Muir, Dies At 67

Murrieta Valley Unified School District Trustee, Barbara Muir, passed away on July 29, 2017. She was 67.

MURRIETA, CA - From the Murrieta Valley Unified School District: Barbara Muir, Murrieta Valley Unified School District Trustee, passed away July 29, 2017,B after a prolonged illness. She was 67. Memorial services are pending. District Superintendent Pat Kelley said, โ€œBarbara was a wonderful educator and she carried that into her role as a governing board member. In every instance, she supported what was best for students. I know I speak for all the board members in saying that her presence and contributions will be greatly missed."

Muir was first elected to MVUSDโ€™s Board of Trustees in November 2012. She was in her second term of office
when she became ill. On July 5, 2017, Muir resigned her position as trustee due to health reasons, effective
September 1.

Early in her Muirโ€™s career, she was self-employed and coordinated casting and production for film companies.
She went on to serve four years in the Air Force Reserve where she attained the rank of Master Sergeant. Muir then worked in civil service as an administrative specialist at March Air Force Base.

Teaching was Muirโ€™s third career. After obtaining her Bachelor of Arts degree from Cal State University, San
Bernardino and her teaching credential, Muir spent eight years teaching high school drama, speech and English in the Moreno Valley Unified School District. She came to Murrieta Valley High School to teach in 1997 and she taught English and coordinated the schoolโ€™s work experience and career education program. Muir was a devoted teacher who used her own varied work experiences to inspire students to acquire marketable job skills. She retired from teaching in 2007.

Muir was a long-time member of Murrieta Rotary Club. She is survived by her sister, Stella Harrison, and she is remembered fondly by her many friends and former students. Board President Robin Crist said, โ€œBarbara
Muir's contribution and service to the board and to the Murrieta community has been exemplary and her
presence will be truly missed.โ€
