Authorities Identify Man Found Dead In Napa Homeless Camp

A 67-year-old man died alone in his tent in a homeless camp near the BMX track at Kennedy Park, police and sheriff's officials said.

NAPA, CA — The death of a homeless man early Sunday in a tent in Napa did not appear suspicious or related to any foul play, officials with both the Napa Police Department and Napa County Sheriff's Office said Monday.

Napa police officers and emergency medical personnel responded around 3 a.m. Sunday to an area near the BMX track at Kennedy Park and found the 67-year old man dead, Napa police Lt. Chase Haag said.

"The deceased was living in a makeshift homeless encampment with others and it does not appear to be related to any criminal activity," Haag said.

Police notified the Napa County Sheriff-Coroner's Office, which responded to the scene and identified the deceased as Napa resident Craig Lee Bouwsma, according to Napa County sheriff's Spokesman Henry Wofford.

Bouwsma was pronounced deceased at 3:11 a.m. Sunday in a tent in the 2200 block of Streblow Drive in Napa, Wofford said.

"He died alone in his tent in a homeless camp," Wofford said. "Another homeless person called it in."

While the homeless man's exact cause of death had not yet been determined Monday, Wofford said when his family members were notified they told the sheriff's office Bouwsma had a medical history.
