California Senate Fellows Program Application Period Opens

Applications are now being accepted for the Calif. Senate Fellows program, an 11-month, on-the-job training opportunity for college grads.

NAPA, CA -- Sen. Bill Dodd (D-Napa) announced Oct. 25 that applications are now being accepted for next fall’s California Senate Fellows program, an 11-month, on-the-job training opportunity for college graduates offering legislative experience and preparation for many public- and private-sector careers.

“Being a fellow gives you a front-row seat on the biggest stage in California government,” Dodd said in a prepared statement. “It is an excellent opportunity to learn what we do in the Capitol while kick-starting a rewarding career in public service. Many fellows have gone on to leadership roles in the Legislature, Congress, the judiciary and other elected positions. It is truly a great place to start.”

The application deadline for the 2020-21 class is Feb. 3, 2020.

Eighteen fellows will be selected to start work in October 2020. They will be placed on a state senator’s personal or committee staff and participate in a broad range of activities including policy research, constituent casework, drafting speeches and writing press releases. Fellowships are preceded by a five-week orientation providing background on state government, the legislative process and major policy issues.

Fellows receive a $2,794-a-month stipend plus health, dental and vision benefits. The program is jointly operated by the Senate and the Center for California Studies at Sacramento State University, which awards six units of graduate credit to fellows.
