Clark Tapped for Napa County Ag Commissioner

Greg Clark, assistant agricultural commissioner, is her recommendation for the office of Agricultural Commissioner-Sealer of Weights of Measures, replacing longtime Ag Commissioner Dave Whitmer, who will retire at the end of December.

Nancy Watt, Napa County Executive Officer, said she will ask the Board of Supervisors to confirm Clark’s appointment at their regular meeting on Nov. 26.

“Agriculture is the keystone of Napa County’s economy, and Greg brings a focused consistency to the ongoing mission of the Agricultural Commissioner’s office,” Watt said. “I believe he is the right person to lead the department forward.”

The Agricultural Commissioner-Sealer of Weights and Measures and staff implement federal, State and local regulatory programs designed to promote agriculture and protect people, the environment and equity in the marketplace. The department’s many programs include food quality and marketing, pests and pesticide regulation, wildlife services and weights and measures. Clark will oversee a staff of 32 and a $5.1 million annual budget.

“Our agriculture-based economy is heavily dependent on the health and well being of our farms, work force and environment,” Clark said. “I look forward to working with department staff, the agricultural community and our residents to promote and protect these resources.”

Clark joined the Napa County Ag Commissioner’s office in 2000, where he has been responsible for the day-to-day administration of the department’s budget, programs, operations and personnel, as well as being on the front lines in the industry’s efforts to manage pests and agricultural diseases.

Before joining Napa County, he was assistant ag commissioner in Stanislaus County; an agricultural biologist at Santa Clara County; a vineyard manager; and a field representative at American Farmland Trust, a non-profit farmland conservation organization.

Clark has a Bachelor’s degree in Viticulture from CSU Fresno and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from San Jose State University. He also holds a County Agricultural Commissioner license and a County Sealer of Weights and Measures license from the California Department of Food and Agriculture

Clark and his wife, Lisa, have lived in Napa since 2000, and their twin sons, Bryan and Cody, graduated from Justin-Siena High School in 2013.
