North Bay Unemployment Rates Tick Downward

Unemployment rates ticked down slightly in September across the North Bay as local economies slog forward through a recession.

NORTH BAY AREA, CA — Unemployment rates ticked down slightly in September across the North Bay as local economies slog forward through a recession.

In Sonoma County, unemployment dropped to 7.2 percent as of Sept. 20, according to preliminary data from the state Employment Development Department.

That's down from a revised figure of 7.5 percent in August and 10 percent in July.

In Solano County, the jobless rate inched down to 9.7 percent from 9.8 percent in August, and down much more significantly from 12.5 percent in July.

In Marin County, the preliminary data show the unemployment rate fell to 6.5 percent from 6.8 percent in August and down from 9 percent in July.

In Napa County, the jobless rate fell to 7.6 percent from 8 percent in August and down from 10.6 in July.

The numbers show that while momentum has slowed a little bit, at least in September, the economy is still headed in a positive direction going into the fall, said Robert Eyler, an economist at Sonoma State University who tracks the local labor market.

"It's pretty much steady as she goes," Eyler said.
