NAPA VALLEY, CA — Napa County Animal Services Officer Nate Valente received a call May 7 about a fawn that had fallen 10 feet down a drain hole in Silverado Country Club.

A resident provided an extension ladder and Valente climbed down and rescued the baby deer.

The fawn was not injured and eventually found its way back to its mom, the sheriff's office reported.

Fun Fact:

A mother deer often leaves her babies alone for long periods of time, particularly in the first few days, because a newborn has no scent and is safer motionless and alone rather than trying to keep up with its mother. She periodically returns to feed her fawn and within a few days, it is strong enough to join its mother on her never-ending quest for food, according to Wildrepublic.com.

That explains why this fawn was alone; we're happy Officer Valente knew just what to do!

Most fawns are born between the middle of May and the end of June, so this one must have been pretty young.
