16-Year-Old North Hollywood Boy Killed In 110 Freeway Pileup

The boy died Sunday night when another vehicle lost control, triggering a pileup near Wilshire Boulevard.

LOS ANGELES, CA — A 16-year-old boy killed in a four-vehicle pileup on the Harbor (110) Freeway Sunday night was from North Hollywood, authorities said Tuesday. Three others were also injured in the crash.

Jonathan Navarro died at the scene of the crash, and three others suffered minor injuries. It happened about 9 p.m. Sunday on the southbound 110 Freeway south of Wilshire Boulevard, according to California Highway Patrol Officer S. Brown.

A 2000 Nissan Quest was in the No. 4 lane and a 2006 Hyundai Azera, 2009 Nissan Versa and a 2012 Ford Edge were in the No. 5 lane when the driver of the Edge "made an unsafe turning movement" and lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the right concrete wall, Brown said.

The Edge then collided with the Hyundai and set off a chain-reaction crash involving the other two cars, the officer said.

The 59-year-old man at the wheel of the Versa suffered minor injuries as did the 18-year-old driver of the Edge and his 18-year-old female passenger. But Navarro, who was also a passenger in the Edge, was killed, Brown said.
