Red Flag Warning Issued For LA Mountains

Wind gusts, warm temperatures and low humdity will combine to make for critical fire conditions in the local mountains.

LOS ANGELES, CA — When it comes to Southern California wildfires, sometimes the wind is the bigger menace than the mercury. A red flag warning was issued for Los Angeles County mountains Friday through Saturday due to the dry windy conditions.

The warning will go into effect at 1 p.m. Friday through Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

"A warm and very dry air mass will lower into southern California on Friday, which combined with locally gusty northwest winds will lead to critical fire weather conditions over the northern Los Angeles County Mountains, mainly from the Interstate 5 Corridor to Lake Hughes," according to the NWS. ``If any new fire ignitions occur, this environment will create extreme and dangerous fire behavior.

According to AccuWeather, temperatures near the LA County mountains will hover in the upper 80s while wind gusts of 15 to 30 mph are expected. With the heat and wind, low humidity — 6 percent and 12 percent — will combine to create dangerous fire conditions.

The Southland was bathing in above-normal temperatures on Thursday, but conditions will gradually cool, reaching normal levels by the weekend, according to the NWS. Coastal areas will continue to be cooled by a nightly marine layer.
