LOS ANGELES, CA — Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence outside a popular Los Angeles shopping center, prompting Major League Baseball to place him on administrative leave Tuesday.

The 22-year-old pitcher was at the Beverly Center on La Cienega and Beverly Boulevards at about 7:30 p.m. Monday when police were called to the scene to respond to an altercation, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to Patch.

Urias was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic battery, and his bail was set for $20,000, Officer Norma Eisenman said.

The Los Angeles Times and ESPN reported Tuesday afternoon that Major League Baseball had placed Urias on administrative leave while an investigation is conducted. The leave generally lasts for up to seven days, but it can be extended by the commissioner of baseball.

The Dodgers acknowledged the arrest late Tuesday morning.

"We learned about the alleged incident this morning and are in the process of gathering information. As a result, we have no comment at this time regarding the incident," said Dodger spokesman Joe Jareck. "However, every allegation of domestic violence must be taken seriously and addressed promptly, and we will cooperate fully with the authorities and Major League Baseball to ensure that that happens in this case."

TMZ broke the news of the incident, reporting that a witness called police saying they saw the Dodger left- hander arguing with a woman and shoving her to the ground. According TMZ, the woman denied that anything physical took place to responding officers at the scene. She insisted it was nothing more than a heated verbal argument.

Born in Sinaloa Mexico, Urias has been with the Dodgers since 2016, posting an overall record of 7-6 with 133 strikeouts.

Major League Baseball has enacted a strict policy on domestic violence. Cubs player Addison Russell just return to the team last week after a 40-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s Domestic Abuse policy when his ex-wife detailed alleged abuse with MLB officials, Sports Illustrated reported.
