Man Charged With Kidnapping Ex-Girlfriend, Killing Good Samaritan
The kidnapping victim was found with the suspect in Hemet, and had suffered non-life threatening injuries.
NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CA — A man was officially charged Thursday after being accused of kidnapping his ex-girlfriend in North Hollywood and killing a man who tried to break up their argument.
Shane Rayment, a Tujunga resident, was charged with one count each of murder, kidnapping, criminal threats, injuring a girlfriend, first-degree residential burglary with a person present and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was previously convicted of drug offenses in 2017 and 2018, and also convicted of charges related to identity theft.
Rayment was arrested shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday by Hemet Police Department during a felony traffic stop, Los Angeles Police Department said. The kidnapping victim, Jenny Downes, was in the car at the time.

Police said Downes was "battered and bruised," but alive with non-life threatening injuries. LAPD officers went to Hemet to interview Rayment and take Downes home, who agreed to seek medical care should her injuries worsen.
Another man from Perris, California, was also in the car at the time Rayment was pulled over. Detectives interviewed the man, but determined he was not involved in the shooting or kidnapping and released him from custody.

Rayment's arraignment is scheduled for June 30 in Van Nuys. He remained in custody Thursday afternoon with bail set at $3 million.
The shooting and kidnapping incident was reported around 2:25 p.m. Sunday afternoon in the 11300 block of Hatteras Street. Police said Rayment and Downes got in an argument at an apartment complex, when a family friend of Downes, tried to break it up.
Police said Rayment then shot the man, before forcing Downes into a car and speeding off.
The victim was later identified as Roberto Fletes, a 42 year old man from North Hollywood, who died at a hospital Sunday.
"It's especially tragic when a good Samaritan becomes a victim," County District Attorney George Gascon said. "I send my heartfelt condolences to his family. Mr. Fletes will always be remembered for his heroic actions on behalf of another."
