49ers Hire Chip Kelly As Head Coach

CEO Jed York called the play on Twitter today: "Trent and I are thrilled to announce Chip Kelly as the new Head Coach of the 49ers."

SANTA CLARA - The San Francisco 49ers today announced Chip Kelly as the team’s new head coach.

49ers CEO Jed York announced the move on Twitter this morning by writing, “After a thorough search, (general manager) Trent (Baalke) & I are thrilled to announce Chip Kelly as the new #HeadCoach of the @49ers.”

Kelly was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles for three years before being fired by the team in December.

He also previously coached at the University of Oregon.

Kelly will replace former head coach Jim Tomsula, who the 49ers released after just one year following a disappointing 5-11 season.
