Golden Gate Recreation Area Names Acting Superintendent
The appointee previously served as Superintendent of San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.

MARIN COUNTY, CA -- Craig Kenkel, Superintendent of Cuyahoga Valley National Park in northeast Ohio, has been appointed Acting General Superintendent of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which includes Marin Highlands.
The position is a homecoming for Kenkel, who served previously as Superintendent of San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, as well as Deputy Superintendent and Chief of Cultural Resources at the National Recreation Area.
Kenkel arrives in mid-December, following the departure of Aaron Roth, who was named Associate Regional Director for Facilities and Lands for the National Park Service Intermountain Region.

"GGNRA is one of the country’s most dynamic and innovative parks," Kenkel said in a prepared statement announcing his appointment. "I have a huge admiration for its staff, partners, volunteers, and visitors, and I am excited to return as the National Park Service heads into its next century."
Kenkel's 33-year career with the National Park Service includes extensive experience managing parks in urban areas.

The Golden Gate National Recreation Area spans three counties: Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo. It includes world-renowned destinations such as Alcatraz Island and Muir Woods, as well as many sites of regional and national importance, including Marin Headlands, Crissy Field, the Presidio, Stinson Beach, Fort Mason, Ocean Beach, Fort Funston, Sweeney Ridge and Mori Point.
