Marin Property Tax Deadline Is Approaching: June 1

Marin County officials Friday reminded business owners they have until June 1 to file their property tax statement without paying a penalty.

MARIN COUNTY, CA — Marin County officials Friday reminded business owners that they have until June 1 to file their business property tax statement without paying a penalty.

Businesses faced a 10 percent penalty if they did not file their tax statements by May 7, but Gov. Gavin Newsom extended the deadline to May 31, a Sunday. The deadline now is officially June 1 to deliver tax statements to the Assessor's Office.

California business property taxpayers are required to report their taxable business property with a combined value of $100,000 or more to county assessors annually. The law requires a 1 percent tax be applied to all business property valued at $5,000 or more.

Business property includes equipment, supplies and tangible assets including printers, copiers, furniture, manufacturing, lab and restaurant equipment but not the businesses' land and building.

Businesses that already filed their tax statement still have until May 31 to file amendments. The Assessor's Office provides assistance in preparing a statement by calling (415) 473-7208 or emailing AssrPersProp@marincounty.org.

Public counters at Aassessor's, Recorder and County Clerk's offices are closed during the novel coronavirus pandemic, but more information on filing requirements and resources are available at the Assessor's Office website.

Residents may also call the Assessor's Office at (415) 473-7215, the Recorder at (415) 473-6093 or the County Clerk at (415) 473-6152 for assistance.

The Marin County Assessor's Office's staff are working during the COVID-19 pandemic to complete their constitutional responsibility regarding processing the tax statements Assessor, Recorder County Clerk Shelly Scott said.
