The Marin Museum of Contemporary Art invited its artist members to work with at least one other artist for the Collaboration: Artist of MarinMOCA Member Show. Working with others has the potential to enlarge and expand artistic vision and produce work that pushes art in new directions. In that same spirit, the museum also asked Lori Austin and Barbra Fortier to team up as jurors. Austin is the Managing Director & Curator of Terra Firma Galleries located in Berkeley & Sonoma. Fortier is the Art & Jewelry Consultant at Terra Firma Gallery in Sonoma. Join us at the opening reception on Saturday, July 11th from 5-7pm (500 Palm Dr, Novato) or during regular business hours from July 11 to August 16.

MarinMOCA member Mario Bubbo has been inspired by the landscapes of Northern California since he was first stationed at the Hamilton Air Force Base in 1965. For the Collaboration exhibit, Mario and his son Michael joined together to create this 30” x 60” acrylic piece titled “Vineyard #1”. Mario says, “It is a departure from my normal, impressionistic technique, and achieves a striking vibrancy and inspired simplicity from the collaboration with my son, Michael.”

Nature and printed media have been a primary source of inspiration for these two MarinMOCA artists, Sharon Kyle Kuhn and Linda Colnett as seen in their collaborative piece, “Recognition.” Kuhn created the back panels from raw wood to create a consistent pattern of shapes painted with industrial black paint while Colnett wrapped various sized wooden dowels with printed materials that embody fashion magazines. When deciding what to create they wanted to give special recognition to the changing and rapid development of information technology where printed material is often seen as an obsolete means of communication. The artwork in its completion hangs 48” tall and 30” across and is comprised of 3 panels. Successfully these two artists bring elements of nature and print together in a responsive piece.

Stone sculptor artist, Charlie Kleiman and metal artist Jonathan Hyman are creating a piece called “The Children of Abraham”. It is still a work in progress and will consist of 3 limestone pillars surrounded by 3 metal rings made of stainless steel, brass and copper. It is 5 ½ feet tall and each pillar weighs about 450 pounds. Kleiman says that “the stone pillars represent the three Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Islam, and Christianity), the metal rings unite the different monotheistic religions and the bi-metal sphere that will float above the piece represents the universality of all religious traditions.”
