Super Bowl Hometown QBs: Novato & San Mateo Mayors Place Bet

NOVATO, CA – With both quarterbacks in Sunday's Super Bowl hailing from hometowns in the Bay Area, the mayors of the two cities -- San Mateo and Novato -- are making a wager on the result of the big game.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady went to Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo and at 41 is making his ninth appearance in the Super Bowl and is seeking his sixth title.

Brady will face Jared Goff and the Los Angeles Rams. Goff, an alumnus of Marin Catholic High School and University of California at Berkeley, grew up in Novato.

Novato Mayor Eric Lucan and San Mateo Mayor Diane Papan have announced a bet that will bring the winner bragging rights, a charitable donation and a basket of goodies from the loser.

If the Rams win, Papan will have to hand-deliver a donation to North Marin Community Services, while a Patriots victory means Lucan will have to bring a donation to San Mateo's Police Activities League.

The losing mayor will also have to go to the other's City Council to present the basket of goods from their own city.

"Experience wins out in this game," Papan said in a news release, noting that Goff was only 7 years old when Brady won his first Super Bowl in 2002, also over the Rams.

Lucan quipped that Brady "may have been to the Super Bowl several times, but Novato's quarterback has never lost one! I'm sure we'll be welcoming a donation from San Mateo after Sunday's big game."

The Super Bowl is set for 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Atlanta.
