Construction Team Goes Above and Beyond to Help Victims of House Fire

The team drove from Modesto on a Saturday to help without charging a a dime after learning the family did not have insurance to pay for it.

The following is a letter to the editor by Belinda Harding

I work for a Benefit Corp called Catastrophe Assistance Team Corp. We make initial contact with victims of house fires or other disasters to see if we can help them with free information and free referrals for assistance.

As soon as we saw the fire at Moss Beach we reached out to the family.

This was a very bad situation where a family member passed away from the fire and the elderly owner was displaced. Two family members were trying to salvage the content items by themselves, working in the driveway, sad and exhausted.

We e-mailed them our booklet, and referred them to help with the aftermath of the fire-as usual. Insurance normally pays for all work necessary regarding clean up, housing, etc.

The company we referred, Inderjit S. Toor Construction, Inc. headed out from it’s Modesto headquarters to help.

While they were en route it was discovered that the there was no insurance to cover this particular service. I contacted the owner, Harinder Toor, who was following his team on the road and advised him of this development. I asked him if he couldn’t still help them somehow.

I don’t know of any other business that would have said what he did: “It’s OK, I’m still coming. We’ll help them. I won’t charge them a dime”. They keep driving 2 more hours, late on a Saturday afternoon to get there with a whole team. The cost out of his pocket was substantial, I’m sure.

This blew me and the family members away. I was hoping he’d help someway, but this was above & beyond anything I could have expected. The next day the family called me to say how wonderful and kind all his staff were, how hard they worked and how it saved the day.

After thinking about it, I figured I’d let someone know of this GOOD deed-as all we usually hear about these days are terrible things. Just goes to show there are compassionate business people out there. God Bless America! And THANK YOU Harinder.
