Boy, 8, Ejected, Dies in Mecca Crash
The boy was not wearing his seatbelt when the minivan he was riding in overturned.

An 8-year-old boy who was not wearing his seatbelt was killed when the minivan he was riding in overturned, ejecting the child, California Highway Patrol officials said today.
The crash -- reported at 7:04 p.m. Monday -- happened on State Route 111, south of Mecca Avenue, CHP Officer Mike Radford said.

Investigators determined that Elizabeth Alvarado, 31, of Thermal, was driving a 2006 Toyota Sienna north on State Route 111 when the minivan swerved to the right, went off the road and overturned.
Alvarado and an 11-year-old girl were taken to Desert Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. Two boys, ages 5 and 2, were not hurt.

The 8-year-old boy, the only occupant of the vehicle not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene, Radford said.
