“Strong onshore flow will cause strong and gusty winds to develop in parts of the deserts this afternoon through tonight,” according to the weather service. “Strongest winds will occur through and east of the San Gorgonio Pass and in the Anza-Borrego Desert.”
The Coachella Valley was not included in the advisory, but forecasters said winds of around 30 mph were expected there this afternoon and could reach 40 mph tonight. Desert Hot Springs in particular was expected to be windy.

The wind could cause hazardous driving conditions, especially along Interstate 10 north of Palm Springs, the NWS said. Visibility along some desert roadways could be reduced by blowing sand and dust. Drivers were advised to use extra caution.
