Funeral Services for Slain Palm Springs Officers Tuesday: Procession, Parking, Closure Details

PALM SPRINGS, CA – The city of Palm Springs will honor slain police officers Jose Gilbert Vega and Lesley Zerebny Tuesday at a public memorial service to be attended by Gov. Jerry Brown and law enforcement officials from across the country.

Vega and Zerebny, who were gunned down Oct. 8 after responding to a family disturbance call at a Palm Springs home, will be eulogized at an 11 a.m. service at the Palm Springs Convention Center. Attendees can start entering the location at 9 a.m.

The officers will be transported to the convention center via separate procession routes, Vega from the Forest Lawn Mortuary in Cathedral City and Zerebny from the Ramona Bowl Amphitheater located in her hometown of Hemet.

Processions to the Ceremony

The following procession route was announced for Officer Zerebny, from the Ramona Bowl Amphitheater to the Palm Springs Convention Center. It's slated to leave Hemet at 7:30 a.m. and arrive in Palm Springs about two hours later.

• Procession leaves from Ramona Bowl Amphitheater located at 27400 Ramona Bowl Road, Hemet at 7:30 AM
• West toward Ramona Bowl Rd
• Continue Straight onto Ramona Bowl Rd
• Continue onto Girard St
• Turn Left onto E Stetson Ave
• Turn Left onto S State St
• Turn Right onto Domenigoni Pkwy
• Turn Right onto Warren Rd
• Turn Right onto Simpson Rd
• Continue onto Warren Rd
• Turn Right onto Mustang Way
• Use the left 2 lanes to turn left onto S Sanderson Ave
• Continue onto CA-79 N/Beaumont Ave
• Turn Right onto the I-10 E Ramp
• Merge onto I-10 E
• Continue E on I-10
• Exit Hwy 111 toward Palm Springs
• Continue onto Hwy 111
• Continue straight onto N Palm Canyon Drive

• Arrive at Palm Springs Convention Center

A procession for Officer Vega will leave Forest Lawn Mortuary in Cathedral city at 9:30 a.m. and arrive at the convention center within about 15 minutes, according to police.

The route is:

• West on Ramon Road through Cathedral City and Palm Springs
• Right on Ave Caballeros

Parking at Convention Center

Members of the public planning on attending the ceremony can park at the Palm Springs Mall, at 2365 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way. Shuttles will be available to take people to and from the convention center.

Roads will be shut down in the surrounding area from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The closures include:

• Alejo Road from Calle El Segundo to Avenida Caballeros
• Hermosa Drive from Amado Road to Tahquitz Canyon Way
• Tahquitz Canyon Way between Calle Encilia and Hermosa Drive
• Calle Encilia between Amado Road and Tahquitz Canyon Way

A graveside service for Vega will follow at the Coachella Valley Public Cemetery in Coachella. Zerebny's graveside service will be held at a private location and will only be open to family members.

The Palm Springs Police Department will be accepting memorial service flower donations until 6 Monday night at the convention center.

Vega, 63, was with the department for 35 years -- five years past his retirement eligibility -- and had planned to finish his career in December.

Zerebny, 27, was with the department for a year and a half and was married to a sheriff's deputy. She gave birth to a daughter four months ago and had just returned to duty from maternity leave.

The alleged shooter, John Hernandez Felix, 26, was arrested by Riverside County sheriff's deputies following a 12-hour standoff at his home. He faces murder, attempted murder and numerous other felony charges, including allegations that could have him facing the death penalty.
