Hiker Rescues Prompt Advisory In Coachella Valley

Hiker rescues performed Wednesday serve as a reminder that weather conditions are getting more challenging.

PALM SPRINGS, CA — Coachella Valley officials are urging residents and visitors alike to be prepared when hiking in the desert after a second rescue was performed Wednesday.

The Palm Springs Fire Department issued a plea to the public after tweeting shortly before 1 p.m. that crews were on scene of a hiker rescue in the city.

"Always bring plenty of water, food, a cellphone, hiking buddy and tell someone the location & expected time to return," the agency tweeted.

There was no immediate update on the hiker's condition.

The plea came after an injured hiker was rescued by helicopter Wednesday morning from the Hopalong Cassidy Trail in Palm Desert.

The "hiker down" call was received at about 6:45 a.m., according to Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department. Firefighters hiked to the person's location and found that the victim was disoriented after falling and suffering facial injuries. Read more about the rescue here.
