Lenticular Cloud Hanging Over Coachella Valley: Photo Of The Day

CATHEDRAL CITY, CA — Sean Lynch knows clouds, and we're grateful for the education!

"This is a lenticular cloud I caught from my side patio here in Cat City looking South last November," Sean wrote to Patch with the attached photo submission.

According to the National Weather Service, lenticular clouds are not uncommon in the western half of the United States.

"Lenticular clouds, technically known as altocumulus standing lenticularus, are a strange-looking cloud formation that form as strong winds blow over and around rough terrain," the agency states on its website. "Some people have mistaken them for UFOs due to their smooth saucer-like shape."
