Rancho Mirage Receives 2016 Cool Planet Award
The city was recognized for its energy efficiency projects at city facilities.

On October 25th, the City of Rancho Mirage was awarded the 2016 Cool Planet Award in the Government & Institutional, Small Sector category in recognition of its energy efficiency projects at City facilities. The award ceremony was held in San Marino. Other past recipients of the Cool Planet Award include Cathedral City and Palm Springs.
The Cool Planet Award recognizes those Southern California Edison (SCE) business customers that demonstrate exemplary leadership in energy and carbon management within their business size and industry sector by implementing energy efficiency projects, participating in demand response programs, and establishing environmental and greenhouse gas emissions management systems.
The Cool Planet Program/Award is run by The Climate Registry (TCR), a non-profit organization governed by U.S. states and Canadian provinces and territories that designs and operates voluntary and compliance greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting programs. Rancho Mirage is a member of TCR.
"We congratulate the 2016 Cool Planet recipients for the spectacular job they have done demonstrating how a smaller carbon footprint can correlate with a business's long-term prosperity," said David Rosenheim, Executive Director of The Climate Registry.
Rancho Mirage was given the 2016 Cool Planet Award for a variety of energy efficiency projects including but not limited to retrofitting lights, installing new energy-efficient streetlights and variable speed pool pumps, and other energy efficiency measures. The City has saved over 200,000 kilowatt hours of energy during the last three years through its energy efficiency projects.
Rancho Mirage Mayor Ted Weill commented on this award by saying, "This is a testament to the City's commitment to energy efficiency and reducing the City's greenhouse gases. We remain committed to providing a high quality of life for our residents by being responsible environmental stewards."
