Book "cubbies" ready to be decorated and go home with a child

Palo Alto, CA, - March 25, 2021 - A beautiful spring day created the backdrop for children at The Primary School of East Palo Alto to jump start their reading careers by creating their own personal book cubbyholes. Each child chose two new books to fill their “cubbies” and begin their book collection.

Organized to support access of books to under-resourced children, more than 100 three- to eight-year-old children and their families participated in this socially distanced activity, organized by three local Rotary Clubs: Palo Alto University, Palo Alto, and East Palo Alto Bayshore.

Student volunteers from Rotary’s Silicon Valley Sunshine Interact Club assembled the book cubbyholes in advance for the children to decorate. They made extras so that children unable to attend the event could still have them.

Partnering with Bring Me A Book Foundation and Bookelicious, the Rotary clubs’ aim was to support literacy and create a passion for books. Feedback from participants was enthusiastic.

"We have been so thrilled at The Primary School in East Palo Alto in getting books to our students and book cubbies in their home. The excitement on their faces, to see their own furniture with their own books in them, have brought so many smiles to our community. We are hoping to expand this program to The Primary School in Hayward and with the assistance of local Rotary clubs, we know this, and more, is possible,” said Vosa Cavu-Litman, a participating teacher from The Primary School.
