November 1: The Dybbuk (1937), 121 minutes
When a father breaks his promise and forbids the son of a close friend to marry his daughter, the would-be bridegroom kills himself in desperation - but not before striking an unholy deal with the powers of darkness. Soon, his spirit possesses the heart of his beloved on the eve of her wedding to another. Michal Waszynski directs this Polish Yiddish masterpiece which stars Leon Liebgold and Lili Liliana.
December 6: A Brivele der Mamen (A Letter to Mother) 1939, 100 minutes
Set in the Polish Ukraine and New York City at the time of the First World War, the film traces the break-up of a family due to stress, the chaos of war and the difficulties of immigrant life. It focuses on one Jewish mother's efforts to keep her family together.
