NYC's First and Only All-Women's Mariachi Group Visits Palo Alto
The Latin Grammy Award-nominated group will perform at the Oshman Family JCC for one night only before Dia de los Muertos.
The Oshman Family JCC presents Mariachi Flor de Toloache, the Latin Grammy Award-nominated group lauded for its fresh and flavorful take on traditional Mexican music. The first and only all-female mariachi group in New York, Mariachi Flor de Toloache’s diverse members come from a variety of backgrounds including Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Australia, Germany, Italy, and the United States. While careful to preserve the centuries-old traditions of mariachi, this unique mix of cultures and personalities allows the band to offer a modern push to the genre and bring mariachi music to new audiences. The group has toured with rock supergroup The Arcs, which included a performance at the Coachella Music Festival in 2016. This rollicking show will be presented at 8:00pm, Saturday, October 27, 2018 at the Oshman Family JCC Schultz Cultural Arts Hall, 3921 Fabian Way, Palo Alto. For tickets ($25-35) and more information, visit paloaltojcc.org/mariachi or call (650) 223-8649.
Featuring a lively blend of modern talent and diversity, Mariachi Flor de Toloache made New York City history in 2008 as its first all-women mariachi band. Led by singers Mireya I. Ramos (founder) and Shae Fiol (founding member), the original group began as a trio playing the harp, violin, and vihuela—a traditional guitar-like Spanish string instrument. Today, Mariachi Flor de Toloache performs as a full mariachi ensemble, with each member’s unique cultural background contributing to the group’s distinct flavor and sound. While preserving the mariachi tradition, Mariachi Flor de Toloache adds some modern touches, making it fresh and accessible to a whole new audience.
Mariachi Flor de Toloache’s performances have illuminated stages and delighted audiences across the world. In November 2015, the group embarked on an extensive European/U.S tour as the opening act for The Arcs, a popular new rock band led by The Black Keys’ singer Dan Auerbach. After performances to sold-out audiences in the U.K., Germany, Holland, Italy, and France, they continued to captivate crowds in the U.S. at legendary venues such as First Avenue in Minneapolis, The Vic in Chicago, Terminal 5 in New York, DC’s 9:30 Club, and Nashville’s Ryman Theater. In spring 2016, the group embarked on a West Coast Tour with The Arcs, which included performances at the Coachella Music Festival. The group’s live performances have been highly praised by the likes of Rolling Stone, Billboard Magazine, The New York Times, and NPR—which raved that “there should be fireworks named after this band, for all the intensity and color and life that bursts forth from Flor de Toloache.”
