Palo Alto Closes City Facilities Due To Coronavirus

Palo Alto is closing libraries, the Art Center, recreation facilities and other places to slow the spread of the coronavirus, officials said

PALO ALTO, CA — City officials in Palo Alto on Friday reported the closure of several city facilities in an attempt to slow the spread of the COVID-19 disease.

The city is also instituting a hiring freeze, effective immediately.

Facility closures that will go into effect Saturday include libraries, the Art Center, recreation facilities including the Mitchell Park Community Center and Teen Center, Lucie Stern Community Center, the Junior Museum and Zoo, the Children's Theatre, the Rinconada Pool and the Palo Alto Animal Shelter, officials said.

City-related events and programs at the Cubberley Community Center are also being suspended.

Open Space Preserves and parks will remain open, and there will be enhanced cleaning at playgrounds.

Beginning Monday, access to City Hall will be by appointment only.

The announcement Friday came on the heels of an order issued by the Santa Clara County Public Health Department prohibiting gatherings of more than 100 people, officials said.

Many essential city services will continue, but some services may be provided online, by phone or by appointment only, officials said.
