Pasadena’s Huntington Memorial Hospital Ranks 10th in California

Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena earned the place of tenth best hospital in the state and fifth best hospital in the Los Angeles metro area, according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2013 Best Hospitals rankings released Tuesday.

The magazine surveyed about 5,000 medical facilities in the U.S. and released its 24th annual rankings according to 16 specialties. 

“Death rates, patient safety, and hospital reputation were a few of the factors considered,” U.S. News and World Report notes. “Only 147 hospitals [roughly three percent of those analyzed] were nationally ranked in one or more specialties.”

Huntington Memorial Hospital, which services Pasadena and various communities bordering the town, ranked number 33 in orthopedics and number 44 in urology nationally.

U.S. News and World Report shared more on the Pasadena hospital: 

“Huntington Memorial Hospital is a 540-bed general medical and surgical facility with 27,895 admissions in the most recent year reported. It performed 8,472 annual inpatient and 4,423 outpatient surgeries. Its emergency room had 59,473 visits.” 

Other Southern California hospitals to be honored in the rankings include:

- Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Westwood and its sister campus in Santa Monica (ranked in 15 specialties) were named the top hospital in the state and Los Angeles area and fifth best in the country

- Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (ranked in 12 specialties) was ranked fourth in the state and 13th nationally

- Keck Hospital of USC (ranked in four specialties) was ranked eighth in California

- UC Irvine Medical Center was ranked ninth in the state
