Generational Relay at Pasadena Senior Games Delights Families at Caltech

Grandchildren sprinted to the 50-meter mark of the world's shortest relay race Saturday at Caltech's Fox Stanton Track & Field Complex.

The kids handed batons to grandparents or older volunteers, who completed the 100-meter dash to the cheers of bystanders.

The track meet portion of the 21st annual Senior Games had about 215 registrants, ranging in age from 50 to 93 -- Kenneth Gross of Chatsworth.

Games coordinator Cynthia Rosedale and meet director Christel Donley have put on the meet since its inception. Donley used to live in Glendale and coached at Occidental College, but now makes an annual trip west from Colorado Springs, CO.

The generational relay is one of the few events not run under rules of USA Track & Field, but the meet featured world age-group record holders including Kathy Bergen of La Canada in the sprints, Rita Hanscom of San Diego in the heptathlon and Donley herself in several events.

A 2-year-old named James Enney of Pasadena was given a head start of several minutes when he decided to make a run for it at his parents' behest.

All in a day's fun at the Pasadena Senior Games.
