Car Show Raises $2600 to Help Pregnant, Homeless Women (Video, Photos)

Elizabeth House, a home and program in Pasadena that helps pregnant homeless women get back on their feet, received all proceeds from Sunday's local car show at Thorson Motor Center.

Despite the cold and windy turn in weather, folks turned out Sunday to view classic cars, listen to music and dine on food from Stonefire Grill at a charity classic car show held at Thorson Motor Center in East Pasadena.

The car show was the dealership’s inaugural fundraiser for Elizabeth House, a Pasadena non-profit started 19 years ago to house and help women who are pregnant, homeless and often abused get help and resources to overcome issues and become healthy, self-sustaining people and parents.

“It’s awesome to have … a well-established business partner with a charity like Elizabeth House,” Elizabeth House founder and executive directer Debbie Unruh told Patch Sunday. “Together we can bring awareness. The car clubs—it’s a level of support we wouldn’t normally have exposure to. I’m really grateful for the turnout.”

Thorson Buick & GMC of Pasadena sales manager Merlin Froyd organized the charity car show to benefit Elizabeth House since he served there with his church, Christian Assembly of Eagle Rock, during an urban outreach event.

Local car owners’ and clubs’ classic autos of all shapes, sizes, colors and eras filled the Thorson Motor Center lot Sunday, but ultimately a 1968 Cadillac won the top prize.

Admission for Sunday’s two-hour classic car show was $10, which included donated lunch from Stonefire Grill, and all proceeds went directly to Elizabeth House.

Band “Who’s Clayton” also entertained spectators with original tunes and covers of songs from artists like Marvin Gaye to LMFAO.

At event’s end, $2600 had been raised.

Froyd hopes to make the charity car show an annual event.
