Pasadena Unified OKs 96 Layoffs

Many of the layoffs could be rescinded at the end of the budget process in June.

The Pasadena Unified School Board approved the layoffs of 96 educators earlier this week, even with the possibility ahead of a boost in state funding for public education, according to a story in the Pasadena Sun.

However, this doesn't automatically mean the layoffs are final -- once the budget ends in June, some of those layoffs could end up being rescinded, the Sun reports.

The fact that the state asks districts like Pasadena Unified to make budget-based calls before lawmakers actually sign off on education spending wasn't lost on some board members. Tom Selinske called it "one of the craziest things we have to do."
