Two New Exhibits Announced at Pacific Asia Museum

"The Garden in Asia" and "The Art of Continuity: Revering Our Elders" will be available for viewing during the holidays.

Two upcoming exhibits at the Pacific Asia Museum during the holiday will examine the concepts of gardens serving as cultural muses and the role of ancestry as a pillar of Asian art.

Nature and its power to inspire take the forefront in the first exhibit, called The Garden in Asia, which will have works from across Asia that "demonstrate the role of the garden as a source of inspiration throughout the centuries," according to a release from the museum. The garden not only functioned as a space for creativity in Asia, but also became a beacon of reflection for many people in their daily lives, the museum release states.

The viewing for the exhibit begins Black Friday, Nov. 23 and lasts for nearly a year, ending on Nov. 17, 2013. The Pacific Asia Museum has a courtyard garden of its own.

People are a focus of the second exhibit named The Art of Continuity: Revering Our Elders, which begins Dec. 14 and lasts until January of 2014. The works found in this exhibit explore the role of ancestry and lineage in the Asian arts, especially objects used in rituals. The museum notes that "elders of prior generations are revered for their accumulated wisdom and ability to guide us through life’s transitions."

“Because these exhibitions draw deeply from our permanent collection, we’re excited to share many important objects that are not often on view,” said Curator Bridget Bray in a released statement. “In addition, the thematic nature of these shows allows us to incorporate a cross-cultural perspective, enriching the visitor experience.”
