Two Plead Not Guilty to Beating in Old Town

Two men pleaded not guilty Friday to an assault charge stemming from the beating of a Marine reservist who died a day after being attacked last month outside a restaurant in Pasadena's Old Town area.

Jonathan Pierre Aquino, 24, and Timothy Scott Coley, 23, are each charged with one felony count of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury in connection with the alleged attack Aug. 5 on Joshua Martinez.

Three other men had already pleaded not guilty.

Fernando Sabino Ramirez, 25, is charged with one felony count each of involuntary manslaughter and assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury.

The criminal complaint alleges that Ramirez personally inflicted great bodily injury on Martinez.

Ramirez "admitted to his role in the assault," Pasadena police said in a statement released last month.

Co-defendants Jonas Cardenas Ramos, 24, and Angel Christopher Moroyoqui, 21, are charged with one felony count each of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury.

Martinez, a 25-year-old active Marine reservist at Camp Pendleton, suffered head injuries during the attack in the 100 block of East Colorado Boulevard and was taken to a hospital, where he died the next day.
