Well, this week, WalletHub ranked 2016’s Best & Worst Cities for Staycations, and lots of California cities are on the list. Ratings that are good and, um, not so good.
Several rankings of California cities surprised us. We did not expect Santa Rosa to be listed above San Diego, which was recently ranked the top U.S. domestic travel destination by Money magazine.

WalletHub says they compared the 150 largest cities in the U.S. with 28 metrics such metrics as movie and bowling costs, golf courses, frozen-yogurt shops and spas per capita, and the cost of house-cleaning services.
San Francisco is the highest ranked California city, considered the 23rd Best Staycation location in the country. Chula Vista finished 150th, dead last of the cities ranked.
Anaheim finished 97th, docked for not having enough swimming pools per capita. Los Angeles, at #147, had fewer public golf courses per capita than virtually any other ranked large city.
Residents of San Bernardino apparently struggle to find their rocky road. The city has very few Ice Cream and Yogurt Shops per capita.
California does have its firsts. Oakland was tied for the first slot with several other national cities for most Beer Gardens per capita. And San Francisco was tied with three other Northwest cities for having the most Coffee and Tea Shops available to residents.
Here's WalletHub's Staycation national map. You can click on any of the circles to find that city's ranking.
