Coroner IDs Sonoma County Man Killed In Hwy 29 Head-On Collision

The 64-year-old died at the scene of the Napa County crash. The other driver was taken to a hospital and arrested on suspicion of DUI.

NORTH BAY, CA — The Napa County Sheriff-Coroner's Office has identified a driver killed in a Calistoga head-on collision Monday that California Highway Patrol believes was caused by a driver under the influence of drugs.

Alvin Ray Minniefield, 64, of Santa Rosa, died at 10:13 a.m. Monday from injuries suffered in the crash at 3700 state Highway 29, Napa County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Henry Wofford said.

Minniefield's passenger, a 62-year-old Santa Rosa woman, was airlifted with major injuries to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, the California Highway Patrol said.

Philip Popick, 30, of Calistoga, was driving southbound on SR-29 in a 2015 Subaru when he crossed into the opposite lane and collided head-on with Minniefield's car, according to the CHP.

Popick suffered major injuries and was taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center where he was placed under arrest on suspicion of felony DUI-drugs causing injury, CHP Officer Marc Renspurger said.
