PETALUMA, CA — After a historically hard year for businesses and families, California and a number of its cities are raising their hourly minimum wage rates, including Petaluma.
Petaluma will soon offer workers a $15.20 hourly minimum wage, up from $15 this year. Small business employees must be paid at least $15 per hour in 2021, up from $14 this year.
Novato, Santa Rosa and Sonoma will also hike their minimum wages.

The minimum wage in California was $13 per hour, but will increase to $14 in 2021 for companies counting more than 26 employees (for businesses with fewer than 26 employees, the wage is rising from $12 to $13.)
Many municipalities already have minimum wages well above that, and several will increase next year. However, minimum wage rules are a complicated patchwork of county and municipal regulations that often vary based on the type of company. Some cities or counties, as shown below, tie their minimum wage rates to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), a method of measuring inflation based of the average change in prices paid by consumers for a fixed market basket of goods and services.

A number of cities' minimum wages automatically go up in either January or July when the CPI is updated.
