SMART Trains To Reach 2-Million Passenger Mark
"Our conductors are ready, and on the day we achieve that milestone, they'll be handing out free passes to passengers for free train trips."

NORTH BAY, CA — Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit is set to reach an important milestone this week.
Ridership statistics show SMART will reach the 2 million-rider mark by Wednesday, June 23, officials with the transit agency said Tuesday in a news release.
"We are grateful to have such strong community support," said David Rabbitt, chair of SMART’s Board of Directors. "With each day that passes, we get closer and closer to reaching the 2 million-rider mark."

SMART train riders who are on board on that special day could be among the many riders who will receive passes for free train trips, SMART officials said.
"Our conductors are ready, and on the day we achieve that milestone, they will be handing out free passes to passengers for free train trips," Rabbitt said. "This is our way of saying 'thank you' to our riders and it is also a way for them to share their SMART train experience with a friend or family member."

SMART service began in August 2017 with stations at Sonoma County Airport, Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, Cotati, Petaluma and San Rafael.
In December 2019, SMART's Novato and Larkspur stations opened.
Next up is the Windsor extension, which is funded and under construction. SMART also has plans for extensions to Healdsburg and Cloverdale; when that happens, the full project will provide 70 miles of passenger rail service — and a bicycle and pedestrian pathway — along the Sonoma-Marin corridor.
