West Sonoma County Man Rescued From Fire By Son Dies In Hospital
Following a fire that destroyed the man's Occidental home, he was hospitalized at the regional burn institute at UC Davis Medical Center.
SONOMA COUNTY, CA— An 85-year-old man who suffered third-degree burns in a fire at his Occidental home earlier this month died Tuesday at a Sacramento hospital. Don Hanni died at the Firefighters Burn Institute Regional Burn Center at the UC Davis Medical Center, according to the Sacramento County coroner's office.
The fire at 11660 Occidental Road near Furlong Road in rural west Sonoma County was reported around 6:50 p.m. on Oct. 1. A preliminary report said one person was possibly trapped in the structure, Occidental Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ron Lunardi said.
The fire collapsed and destroyed Don Hanni's residence and heavily damaged his son Robert Hanni's home on the property, Lunardi said.

Don Hanni lit a wood stove before he took a bath, and firefighters narrowed the origin of the fire to the stove area, Lunardi said Wednesday.
Robert Hanni found his father near a window in the front of the house and dragged him out a sliding glass door. The elder Hanni's Ford pickup truck also burned, according to Lunardi.
