RODEO, CA — The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District is conducting wildland fire "burn" training Thursday in Rodeo with the Phillips 66 refinery.

Training is scheduled for the daylight hours and involves setting controlled fires and extinguishing them under careful supervision, Con Fire Spokesperson Steve Hill said in a news release.

"Firefighters will gain valuable experience and training through this controlled burn to help them better protect the communities they serve," Hill said.

The fires will also minimize grass and brush fuels in the area, decreasing the threat of wildfire.

"This fire-prone area has burned annually for the last three years, each time presenting the potential to threaten homes and oil industry infrastructure," Hill said.
