Councilman Passed Away Friday After Cancer Battle

A "celebration of life" is scheduled on Sept. 13.

A member of the Pinole city council and a former mayor, Phil Green, passed away on Friday, city officials said. Green, a veteran of Pinole politics whose first council appointment in the city was in 1986, died after a long illness, according to a post on the city’s website.

Green, who was also a Pinole mayor for a year in 1987, started serving as a councilman again in 2010. He participated in various committees in the region, including the West Contra Costa Unified School District Bond Oversight Committee. Green was battling cancer, according to a blog post by Ivette Ricco, who has served on the Pinole Chamber of Commerce and in other community roles.

Green had a “celebration of life” on Sept. 13 at the Richmond Country Club with friends and family, where he spoke to as many as 300 people, according to Ricco.
