Drowning Victim Was Visiting Family In Contra Costa County

BAY AREA, CA — A 25-year-old citizen of Guatemala who was in the Bay Area to visit family in San Pablo died Sunday when he drowned in Lake Berryessa, the Napa County Sheriff's Office said.

Around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, the sheriff's office got a call that Marcos Salvador Grijalva Pocasangre was drowning in the Oak Shores Day Use Area, according to Henry Wofford, spokesperson for the sheriff's office.

"Witnesses say Mr. Pocasangre went under water while attempting to swim from one side of the cove to the other," Wofford said.

In addition to the Napa County Sheriff's Marine Unit, emergency personnel from Cal Fire, California Highway Patrol and AMR ambulance also responded to the drowning incident.

At 7 p.m., the sheriff's dive team recovered Pocasangre’s body 15 feet from McKenzie Ridge, in water approximately 12 feet deep.

Pocasangre's body showed no signs of trauma, Wofford said.

It marked the second drowning in nine days at Lake Berryessa.

Billy Dy, 22, of San Jose, drowned June 18 while swimming in the Pleasure Cove area of the lake.
