Fatal I-80 Crash Victim Identified

The deadly crash happened early Friday morning on Interstate Highway 80 in Crockett.

CROCKETT, CA — A man who died after being transported to a hospital in Vallejo with major injuries suffered in a collision on Interstate Highway 80 in Crockett early Friday morning has been identified by the Solano County coroner's office as Jaipal Walia of Fairfield. The crash that killed Walia, 67, occurred around 3:55 a.m. near the Pomona Street off-ramp from eastbound Highway 80 but was preceded by an earlier crash that happened around 1:20 a.m. when a big-rig overturned and caught fire.

In that incident, a 29-year-old Hayward man was rescued by good Samaritans and suffered only minor injuries. However, the crash blocked the whole roadway and led to traffic congestion.

More than two hours later, Walia was approaching the scene of the initial crash and hit the back of a different big-rig that had stopped in traffic.

Neither the big-rig's driver nor his passenger were injured in the second crash.

Investigators do not believe that drugs or alcohol were factors in either crash.
