Man Shot, Killed At West Contra Costa Apartment Complex: Sheriff

The homicide victim died from multiple gunshot wounds, the sheriff's office said.

WEST CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — A homicide investigation continued Monday into a fatal shooting Sunday in the Tara Hills neighborhood of West Contra Costa County, the sheriff's office said.

Deputies with the sheriff's Bay Station were dispatched at 12:39 p.m. Sunday to investigate a report that shots were fired at an apartment complex at San Pablo Avenue and Crestwood Drive, according to Jimmy Lee, spokesman for the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff.

A man inside a car was suffering from a gunshot wound and deputies "immediately began life-saving measures" while emergency medical personnel were en route.

The victim's injuries were too grave and he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff's office identified the victim as 30-year-old Charles Johnson, a resident of San Francisco.

An autopsy Monday morning showed Johnson died from multiple gunshot wounds, Lee said.

Homicide detectives were continuing their investigation and asked anyone with any information to call the sheriff's Investigation Division at 925-313-2600 or the sheriff's Dispatch Center at 925-646-2441.
