Possible Oil Spill Investigated in San Pablo Bay

The US Coast Guard reports a visible sheen on the water that can be seen from the air and by boat. Ferry service halted. (Breaking)

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA – A mysterious odor and possible sheen on the water that prompted shelter-in-place orders overnight in Vallejo has also prompted the halting of ferry service out of the city this morning.

San Francisco Bay Ferry officials issued an alert at 7:10 a.m. today saying they are assessing a possible oil spill in San Pablo Bay that is affecting the route between Vallejo and San Francisco.

Bus shuttles are being made available for passengers while ferry service is stopped.

At 7:55 p.m. Tuesday, Vallejo firefighters reported on Twitter that a strong odor had been reported in the city's Glen Cove and Beverly Hills Park neighborhoods.

By 10 p.m., more than 800 calls had been received by dispatch and a number of residents reportedly went to the hospital, city spokeswoman Joanna Altman said.

A shelter-in-place order was issued for the area but was lifted at 6:28 a.m. today.

The U.S. Coast Guard investigated the odor and a sheen was reportedly visible on the water by helicopter and boat. Coast Guard crews were planning on going back out this morning to further investigate the incident.
