Man Found Dead in Car in Poway Had Been Reported Missing

The man whose body was discovered Tuesday off Scripps Poway Parkway was reported missing several days prior, authorities said.

SAN DIEGO, CA: Authorities have released the name of a Sorrento Valley man found dead behind the wheel of his mangled car hundreds of feet down an embankment alongside a winding Poway road.

A bicyclist riding on a bike path next to Scripps Poway Parkway spotted 25-year-old Aaron Mahaffey's Nissan 300ZX in a ravine on the north side of the roadway near Danielson Street shortly before noon Tuesday, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office.

Traffic detectives determined that Mahaffey had been driving to the west when his car veered off the road, vaulted over a dirt berm and plunged down the adjacent hillside, sheriff's Sgt. David Cheever said.

Mahaffey had been reported missing several days prior to the discovery of his body. The crash apparently occurred late Friday night or early Saturday morning, while Mahaffey was on his way home from a friend's house, his mother told reporters.
