New Captain to Head Poway Sheriff’s Station

Capt. William Donahue will replace Capt. Mike Hernandez.

The city of Poway contracts with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department for law enforcement, meaning that the captain of the local station has a similar role that a chief of police fulfills.

Capt. Mike Hernandez has commanded the Poway Sheriff’s Station , after working at the 4S Ranch substation and for the East County Gang Task Force. Thursday will be Hernandez’s last day as Poway’s captain, as he will be heading the department’s Specialized Investigations Division.

The city council bid farewell to Hernandez at Tuesday’s meeting and presented him with a certificate of appreciation.

“I really do feel bad about seeing you leave while at the same time your new charge is going to do a great job,” said Mayor Don Higginson.

“I do want to thank the mayor and council and especially the city manager for giving me the opportunity to work here in Poway,” Hernandez told the council. “It’s a good place to work with great leadership and I appreciate the opportunity to work here.”
