Poway High Alum Named Semifinalist For William V. Campbell Trophy
University of San Diego nickelback Max Michaels is among 181 semifinalists for the best football scholar-athlete trophy.

SAN DIEGO, CA – University of San Diego nickelback Max Michaels was among the 181 semifinalists announced Wednesday for the William V. Campbell Trophy, presented annually to the nation's best football scholar-athlete.
Michaels, a fifth-year senior accountancy major, was named to the Division I Academic All-America football team in 2016. The Poway High School alumnus is fourth on the team with 24 tackles.
The National Football Foundation will announce 12-14 finalists on Nov. 1, with each receiving an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. The finalists will travel to New York City for the 60th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 5, The trophy recipient will have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.

The trophy is named in honor of the late Bill Campbell, former chairman of the business and financial software company Intuit and football coach at Columbia University.
The semifinalists were nominated by their schools. They must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of playing eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first-team player or significant contributor and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.

The finalists are selected by the NFF Awards Committee, which consists of a nationally recognized group of media, College Football Hall of Fame members and athletic administrators.
