Poway Schools Improve Index Scores for 10th Straight Year

All schools in the district scored above the state goal of 800 on the Academic Performance Index.

Poway Unified schools improved their Academic Performance Index scores for the 10th year in a row in 2012, with all schools above the state-designated target score.

The API reflects growth in student achievement from one year to the next. It is determined by results on the California Standards Tests in English, math, history/social science and science, and the California High School Exit Exam. The API is also a component of federal No Child Left Behind requirements and serves as the cornerstone of California’s State Testing, Accountability, and Reporting Program.

The state target score was 800, and Poway Unified’s score went up 5 points to 892, according to the district. In 2004-2005, four PUSD schools earned API scores over 900. By 2007-2008, the number of schools had increased to 16. The most recent results show 22 PUSD schools with API scores over 900.

“The commitment and hard work of our teachers, staff, administrators, parents, and our students make these results possible. Our teachers and principals use these test results and other measures to identify specific areas where they can continue to make improvements and capitalize on areas of student growth,” PUSD Superintendent John Collins said in a statement.
