Mental health is inseparable from physical health and is often a topic that people are hesitant to discuss. Serafin Lalas, MD, a psychiatrist at Loma Linda University Health, says anxiety, depression, PTSD, and stress are all common issues men often deal with in silence.

“Depression, in particular, is under-diagnosed in men,” says Lalas. “Diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders in men can sometimes be difficult due to stigmas that discourage expression of moods or feelings.”

Researchers have found evidence that stress, emotional distress, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder can all weaken the immune system and disrupt the balance of hormones in the body.

“If you’re feeling mentally strained, consider talking to a professional,” Lalas says. “You deserve to be at your best, and there are people who can help you manage mental fatigue and stress in moments when your mental health isn’t operating at its peak.”
