Redlands Man Ejected, Killed In Interstate 10 Crash

The CHP says the man was not wearing a seatbelt and that he was ejected during the collision.

INDIO, CA — A Redlands man was killed and woman was injured over the weekend in a crash on Interstate 10 about 13 miles east of Indio, authorities reported Tuesday.

The 40-year-old man was driving a 1996 Hyundai Electra about 3:30 a.m. Sunday eastbound on the 10 west of the Cactus City Rest Area, according to the California Highway.

"For unknown reasons, the Elantra traveled to the left and collided into the guardrail, causing the vehicle to overturn into the dirt center median," CHP Officer Jackie Quintero said in a news release. "The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the Elantra during the collision."

CHP officials said the impact sent the man "several feet ahead of the vehicle." His name was not immediately released.

A 45-year-old Redlands woman in the passenger seat was sleeping and woke up to find herself upside down in the vehicle, the CHP said. She climbed out of the vehicle on her own and was taken to a hospital with neck, back and left arm pain.
